Mechanical fastening versus glued systems

Mechanical fastening

When you speak of or hear about mechanical fastening in (flat)roofing, this means two things:
1. fastening the insulation to the construction by means of a screw and pressure plate or screw and tube;
2. fastening the roofing membrane through the insulation to the construction by means of a screw and pressure plate or screw and tube.

In contrast to glued systems, a correction is always possible for mechanical fastening, when a fastener is not properly fitted / mounted. The number of fasteners and the type of fastener can be determined per zone of the roof by means of a wind load calculation. Immediately after the fasteners are placed, they can absorb the full wind load.

Insulation is increasingly used in several layers due to higher insulation-requirements. With mechanical fasteners, these layers can be fixed with one fastener. The use of plastic tubes also reduces the effect of thermal bridges, which -for example- is created by screws.

Another advantage of mechanical fastening is that during the processing of the screws and tubes or metal plates, no harmful substances are being released. Besides that  your clothes are still clean at the end of your working day.

When an underground is not strong enough to apply mechanical fasteners (for example wooden beams), there is a possibility to fasten the products in the underlying construction. With our GuardianWeld-system (an innovative induction system, developed by Guardian), the metal pressure plates are being fixed in the beams (TT-elements), independent of the overlay of the membrane.

Especially in the winter, mechanical fixation has a benefit from glued system. Cold has little or nu effect on the installation of a fastener. It is no coincidence that there is so much mechanical fastening in the Scandinavian countries!

Advantages mechanical fastening versus glued systems

Mechanical attached fasteners can absorb the full wind load, which is calculated behorehand.

With a demolition, a mechanically fastened roof construction is relatively easy to sperate and therefore more environmetally conscious.

Easy assembling and easily controllable.

Plastic tubes reduce the effect of thermal bridges, which are created by screws.

Metal pressure plates, plastic tubes and screws have an unlimited shelf life.

A screwdrillmachine is sufficient for the fixation.
